I’m sorry sir, we are out of intermedite, I can get you a midsize. Do you prefer a corolla or a sonic?

I rented a car while I and my friends were visitng France. I wanted to make sure that we wouldn’t get a diesel car. Most rental cars in France are diesel cars so we decided to rent the smallest class where diesel engines weren’t even available.
So what could go wrong?
We rented the car online and headed to fetch it. When we arrived to the location we received a “free upgrade” as they didn’t anything from the smallest class...
I didn’t want any free upgrade. I wanted something with spark plugs!

God dammit Enterprise a Fusion is not a fullsize car.

Exactly! it’s just big boned!

Not in the U.S. but in the U.K. and Europe it is a full size before going into SUV and MPV territory.

That would be fine if I were renting vehicles in Europe but I’m not.

Granted. But if a Mondeo/Fusion isn’t classed as full size in the U.S., what is?

This is why you get status with the car rental company, so that you can qualify for “Pick any car for your reservation rate”
I’ve gotten Camaros, Chargers, Silverados, and Mustangs with that... Although one time I paid about $20 extra/day (on top of the cheap corporate rate) for a BMW 528i (from Avis [!])

That would be a Dodge Charger, Ford Taurus, Toyota Avalon, Chevrolet Impala, Audi A8, BMW 7-Series, etc.

The Taurus, Impala, etc... are marginally bigger but the Charger must be smaller.

The Charger is almost 5” longer than the Toyota Avalon, and only 1-2” shorter than the Impala.

Really. It looks much smaller, maybe it’s the shape or something.

Are you thinking of the Challenger? The Charger (above) is a big-ass car.
![]() 11/16/2015 at 11:43 |

No I was thinking the Charger but thought the exterior size was similar to the Fusion but much smaller interior.
![]() 11/16/2015 at 11:48 |

Nope it’s a big car. Not sure about the interior but the body is quite large.

Cool. Mind none of those cars appeal to me personally.
I’m getting old really fast though.

since when did a sonic/corolla become mid sized? Idiots.

Note: rental cars scaled in proportion to rental counter operator’s IQ... so half scale is about right /below-the-line sarcasm
Hertz really does suck unless you have a bajillion customer loyalty points for upgrades, and then they will tell you they don't have any cars on the lot anyway, except this beat up old snowplow or this 2-stroke golf cart the cleaning crew uses... but if you are willing to wait, they'll give you what ever rolls in next. /rant

Rental cars are always one size smaller than real life.
A Fusion is a full-size, a Focus is a mid-size, a Fiesta is a compact, and a Taurus is a premium, because, apparently, “premium” is a size now.
I suppose a Peel P50 would be considered a subcompact, if one were to make it into the Hertz fleet.
